General Information
(Bar/Bat Mitzvah program)
-
What
Will My Child Learn?
The Hebrew School program will take the students through basic Hebrew,
introduction to the Siddur, the Friday evening service, and the Torah Service.
Starting in the 3rd year of the program, they will also learn about Israel,
Jewish tradition, what it means to be a Jew, Messianic Judaism, faith in God,
the Bible and Yeshua, and much more.
-
Do We
Have to Attend Services? Once in Hebrew school, attendance of 2 times a month is strongly
encouraged (especially once your child is 5th Grade or older) but it
is not required until 12 months before your child’s bar/bat-mitzvah.
-
How Old
Does My Child have to Be? The Hebrew School program begins in 3rd Grade. For two years the
students meet once a week for one hour, then they meet once a
week for 1 1/2hrs. Starting in 5th Grade the students start working
through the Friday evening service and the Saturday Torah service, and so
attending services at Shalom Yisrael gives them an opportunity to practice what
they are learning and reinforce both their Hebrew & their Jewish experience;
again, not required but strongly encouraged.
-
What If
My Child is Older?
If your child is older than 3rd grade and has not yet started Hebrew
but would like to be bar/bat mitzvahed, we will work with you and your child to
determine how best to put them through our program and how long it will take.
-
What If My Child has Trouble
Learning Hebrew?
Some children (and adults) find Hebrew easier to pick up than others. If your
child struggles in one of our classes, we will work with you to best help your
child go through the program. In addition, if your child has a learning
disability, there are modifications that can be made to the bar/bat mitzvah
program so that they do not have to miss out on this tremendous opportunity!
-
What if We
are Not Part of the Shalom Yisrael Community/Ministry? We recognize
that there are [Jewish] families who believe in Yeshua and have chosen to make
the church their home, yet want to instill traditions in their children. Shalom
Yisrael would like to serve those families and in this case the criteria would
slightly differ. A minimum requirement will be Hebrew proficiency before
the final 12 month period and some attendance at services during the final
months before the bar/bat mitzvah; the details can be worked out individually.
-
Parents
Welcome! If you
would like to learn Hebrew at the same time as your child, you are welcome join
the Hebrew school also. However, please bear in mind that the cost is the same if you enroll
and you will
be expected to learn and do the same work as the other students!!
12
Months Before the Bar/Bat Mitzvah (for all)
The
last 12 months before bar/bat-mitzvah, the following is required:
- Regular
attendance at Shalom Yisrael's services - minimum
1 time a month
- Hebrew school participation
- Serving
within Shalom Yisrael
- 6-12
months community service
- 6
months one-on-one work with Rabbi Adam for portion, trop and speech
preparation (may require extra cost depending on below).
Who Comes to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Ceremony?
We would ask families to bear in mind that while the
after-ceremony celebrations are by invitation only, it is normal for the bar/bat
mitzvah service itself to be open to the public so that the local congregation
can celebrate with you and your child at this tremendous time of their life.
Bearing this in mind, we request that the service not be made a private affair
and the local worshipping community, which is Congregation Shalom Yisrael, be
invited and made welcome to it.
What is the Cost?
We have a three-tier system
for our Hebrew School:
-
Tithing and Regular Giving, Attending Families of Shalom Yisrael: $90
p/semester (includes books)
-
Non-Tithing, Participating Families who enroll their children in the
Hebrew school program: $125 p/semester (includes books)
- Non-Participating
Families who seek to have their children bar/bat-mitzvahed through our
shortened 24 month program; Basic Hebrew at $200 per semester (1st year),
one-on-one tutoring/preparation $500 per semester (2nd year).
*Please note that these costs do not
include the bar/bat mitzvah ceremony expenses which include the
rabbi's payment, and payment for the Shalom Yisrael music team or any special
music requested. In addition, please be aware that if equipment needs to be
moved to another location for the ceremony, you are responsible for taking care
of that also.
Partial
scholarships available if necessary on a need basis
Shalom!
